The thinking behind Date Hill Way

Most consulting reports sit on a shelf. We try to write ones that do not.

Date Hill Way started in the autumn of 2017, after Joseph Garside left a senior strategy role at a national logistics firm. The name comes from a road in rural Nova Scotia where he spent a summer working through what kind of practice he actually wanted to build. The answer was a small one. One advisor, a limited number of clients at any given time, and enough space in the calendar to think carefully before speaking. The first client was a regional non-profit in Dartmouth that needed help restructuring its governance after a difficult board transition. That engagement took four months and produced a governance framework still in use today.

The practice has stayed deliberately small. Most engagements run between three and six months, and Joseph works with no more than four or five organizations at once. That constraint is intentional. It means he reads every document, attends every relevant meeting, and writes every report himself. Over the years, the work has covered sectors including community health, post-secondary education, municipal government, and private logistics. The common thread is not the sector but the situation: an organization that knows something needs to change and is not quite sure how to begin.
